From Talent Manager -
Tom is an extraordinary storyteller and a sensitive, insightful director. Working on “Downfall” was often extremely challenging, due to a tight schedule, complex logistics and an ambitious script, but Tom was an inspiration to the crew- indefatigable, always positive and possessed of an unflagging attention to detail. As a relatively novice presenter I found him an invaluable teacher, and particularly appreciated his giving me space to find my own way within the show whilst ensuring that we fulfilled all the producers’ criteria. I would be delighted to work with him again and would recommend any of my colleagues to do so. Lisa Hilton - Presenter BBC4 - Charles I:Downfall of a King Tom is a consummate film-maker, able to communicate complex ideas and stories with a strong visual sense. His work has a playful side that I love - commentary scripts in particular are always witty and sharp. He's a very hard worker, and a consummate diplomat - while working on Art, Passion & Power: The Story of the Royal Collection, he quickly forged strong personal links with the presenter Andrew Graham-Dixon, as well as the Collection themselves. He always delivers. Sebastian Barfield -Series Producer BBC4 - Art, Passion & Power: The Story of the Royal Collection Tom is an experienced and thoughtful specialist factual series producer/director who can handle complicated and nuanced subjects to find a convincing and accessible narrative. He is careful with historical detail, has a great eye for visual context and is excellent with talent. Working within a tight time frame and budget, he remained a gentleman throughout. Anne Stirling - Executive Producer BBC4 - Charles I:Downfall of a King Tom is an intelligent and thoughtful director whose attention to detail is impressive, particularly with regard to the level of research he undertakes. Consistently calm and good humoured, he's also a pleasure to work with. Judith Winnan - Executive Producer BBC4 - Art, Passion & Power: The Story of the Royal Collection Tom is an excellent storyteller with a knack for identifying the incidents and events that bring a larger story or period of history to life, and with an eye for the quirky but telling detail. He then brings this confidently to screen, securing assured performances from his presenters. He's used to working on tight schedules and with limited budgets. He's a particularly skilled writer, bringing a real wit and flair to his commentary scripts. John Das - Series Producer BBC4 -Timeshift Tom is a versatile, stylish and gifted director who has a strong feel for storytelling and what will interest an audience in a subject. There is a rare inquisitiveness at the heart of his film-making that leads him to find unusual angles and perspectives to illuminate stories in fresh, distinctive and unexpected ways. Because of this, he is comfortable working across a wide range of genres, in programmes exploring science and technology as well as arts and history. He is highly collaborative and flexible, winning the respect of presenters, contributors and colleagues alike of - a real team player. Michael Poole - Executive Producer BBC4 - Timeshift and Paul Merton's Silent Clowns Tom is conscientious, hard-working, talented and collaborative. It's no coincidence that his film on the industrial Revolution was chosen to start the inaugural series of WTH, a series which has already been recommissioned twice.
